There's also a surprisingly good selection of food on the island, but the opening hours are not extensive. The ferry was also super convenient for our day-trip out to Barangaroo and Circular Quay. The freedom to wander around the island is so cool, and there's even a cinema that screens movies each evening (apparently Shutter Island was on the evening we were there but it was a little too meta for us!) Be warned it's a fair trek up and down from your accommodation by foot, but you may be able to arrange a buggy if you have accessibility concerns. I had never considered staying on Cockatoo Island before, but am so glad we did. We had the best time and I would highly recommend this to anyone. We appeared to have a family of elephants staying there at the same time, although we did the ghost tour the next evening and they tried to persuade us it was the resident ghost making all that noise (hint: it wasn't). The only negative is that you can hear people in the upstairs accommodation stomping around which can be quite disruptive. The security officer drove us up to our apartment in a buggy which was very convenient! The accommodation was very modern given the buildings are quite old. We arrived on the Friday evening (on the 10PM ferry) and had coordinated with the visitors centre to meet security at the wharf to assist us with check-in. The view is absolutely unreal and we had the most magnificent weather for our stay.

However, I saw that they had actual housing-type accommodation available to book as well, so went with that (I'm so glad I did!) We booked the one-bedroom apartment (23C) which is situated beneath two other two-bedroom apartments (23A&23B).

I saw a story about Cockatoo Island on Sydney Weekender and went to book with the intention of staying in one of their newer deluxe couple's tents.
